1. Imagine your friends are posting alarming posts on their personal pages (loss of belief in God, a feeling that life is empty or absurd, feelings of being “inauthentic,” fear of there not being an afterlife, and so on). You’ve been reading about their meaningless lives, and you get a sense your friends are looking for something deeper, something more than what their favorite trashy magazine at HyVee can offer them, and something more than what their little silver soul mates – that is, their cell phones – can offer them. Now imagine that you have to make a Facebook post about at least one of the existentialist philosophers we’ve studied this week. What existential problem or problems your friends need help addressing that at least one of existentialist philosophers can address, thus helping your friends to live more authentic and more meaningful lives? Here their problems can be with loss of religious faith, the lack of meaning in life, problems with self-identity, the scary thought that there may not be an afterlife, and so on.
2. write exam question for students to answer – a question about Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, or de Beauvoir’s philosophy in relation to Bukowski’s characters and their daily problems – what question would you ask students? Why is it important for students to answer and discuss your question? Be specific.
