PROMPT Write an essay about Brewster exploring one of the thematic ideas the book covers, such as friendship, family, loss, abuse, dysfunction, love, etc. You will need to make a point about one of these ideas (or one not listed here) in order to formulate a thesis statement which will guide and control your essay. In particular, discuss how character choices and decisions help develop the theme you select. Make sure to utilize specific scenes throughout the text, including the climax, to support your assertions. And, do not use any outside sources to compose your essay—your ideas should be your own. Finally, do not include “I” in your discussion. NOTE The evidence you choose should not simply be a summary of the scenes but rather an analysis of character and action. In other words, how is the scene genuinely providing evidence of this theme? And use the Text-Based Essay Outline PowerPoint as a guide. THESIS STATEMENTS As touched on in the prompt, a thesis statement controls, asserts, and (often) structures. Please include the following components in yours: controls: an identification of the author and text (unless you have clearly identified it elsewhere in your introduction) asserts: a clear sense of the focus/topic of the paper—make a POINT (connects to prompt) Simply stating that the theme of love is in Brewster does not make a point and is not a thesis. What about love? How does it affect character choices and decisions? And consider including: structures: a concise list—map—of the support/discussion points your essay will cover. What will you use from the text to support your thesis? Remember– no "I" announcements in the introduction about what you will write about in essay!
