After that, you will develop an argument about a specific topic and further develop that argument with research. Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to: Compose a critical research paper that compares important elements (characters, social issues, moral tensions, literary goals or styles, etc.) from the assigned readings. Establish a thesis and outline and then support the thesis with clear evidence and effective argumentation by using supporting sources. Research Paper: Topic: Social Power and the Human Heart, Part 1 Read Oedipus (Chapter 9 in Familiar Strangers) Topic: The Power of Love (in its Various Forms), Part 1 Read the following selections: “Evening Faces” selection from The Tale of Genji (Chapter 20 in Familiar Strangers) “David and Bathsheba” (II Samuel 11:1–12:25) – (Chapter 6 in Familiar Strangers) Optional readings: “Wisdom about Love” (Proverbs 5:1–23, 6:20–35, 7:1–27, and 31:10–31) and “Defining Love” (I Corinthians 12:31–13:13) (see the note below) The biblical readings can be used to supplement the secular readings assigned. Students should not solely focus his or her Discussion Board posts, the Essay, or the Research Paper on the biblical readings. It is great to study the Bible, but this course is intended to introduce students to the many works of world literature. Part 1: Paragraph and Outline Instructions Step 1: Find a topic which relates to two assigned readings from Weeks 5–7. (You may use biblical sources in your paper, but the discussion must include a focus on at least one non-biblical reading assignment.) For example, you might compare the beliefs of two authors. You might compare romantic relationships presented in the readings. You might consider how various ways define and use power in the works. You could consider the life-styles of two or more authors. You might pick a single feature of human nature and show how it is found in various readings. Step 2: Narrow your topic to a thesis or claim that your whole paper will attempt to prove. You will need to rewrite your thesis many times. Later, as you write your drafts, you need to be willing to adjust your thesis as you learn more about your topic. Step 3: Develop an introductory paragraph which prepares your readers to understand your thesis. Step 4: Next, develop your plan or outline for your paper. What does the reader need to know first, second, third, fourth, etc.? Later, in the final draft of your project, you will need at least three peer-reviewed, outside sources (not the textbook materials) which will (A.) help prove your points or (B.) help introduce some of the issues of your paper. A works cited/references/bibliography page will also be needed in your final draft. If you are having difficulty, use the Liberty Online Writing Center for help. Submit this assignment by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Week 6. Research Paper: Part 2: Final Draft Instructions Use the following guidelines to write the final draft of your Research Paper: 1. Your paper must be 1,200–1,500 words. 2. Your topic must some how relate to two readings from Weeks 5–7. 3. Include at least two quotes from each of the selected readings. For example, if you are comparing Petrarch and Luther, provide at least two quotes from eachauthor. 4. Your paper must include ideas or quotes from at least three scholarly sources. Do not include any non-scholarly material such as Wikipedia, MasterPlots, CliffNotes, SparkNotes, or most publications on the internet. Scholarly dictionaries, scholarly encyclopedias, and the Bible may be used in the paper; however, they will not count towards the three required scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources. 5. Your paper must include a clear thesis statement embedded in an interesting introduction, and must have well organized paragraphs. 6. Your paper must include transitional statements guiding the reader from one paragraph to the next and from one thought to the next within each paragraph. 7. Your paper must include a conclusion that challenges the reader to thoughtfully review what has been covered and to think deeply about the possibilities of making further connections between the paper’s points and the reader’s daily lifeand thoughts. 8. Your references to primary and secondary sources should follow current MLA, APA, or Turabian guidelines. 9. Your paper must be double spaced, written in Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font, and use 1-inch margins.
