Global Aging; Responding to Aging Populations

Using data from United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, the website Population Pyramid tracks changes in each country’s population from 1950 with projections through 2100 (see Link 1 below). From 2.51 billion in 1950, the world’s population will reach 11.21 billion at the end of this century with the population pyramid transforming into a cylinder as both the birth and date rates fall. The Population Reference Bureau website (Link 2 below) contrasts the demographic trends of more developed and less developed regions of the world. This site has information about a range of aging issues, as well as articles that will help you with #2 below.

For your case analysis:

First, select a country that you are especially interested in learning more about and, using Web-based sources (these don’t count towards the scholarly sources required for the assignment) and peer-reviewed articles, characterize projected demographic trends over the next several decades. The Population Reference Bureau website (Link 3 below) is the place to begin.
Second, outline any policies or programs that you could find that are in place for older people in that country. For example, the public pension system in China is funded in the same way as Social Security, but there is a mandatory retirement age for men of 60 and for women, 55. In the near future, because of the one-child policy that was in place until just recently, China will have too few workers to support retirees.
Third, identify the types of cultural influences that may affect how a country responds to an aging population.
