Part A: Systems Analysis (50 Marks)
Assume you are designing a retailing management system for a retailer which owns multiple stores. The following narrative describes a business process that you learned from a manager:
A customer arrives at a checkout register with items to buy. The cashier uses the retailing management system to record each item. The system presents a running total and line-item details for the purchase. The customer chooses one of the two ways to make a payment: by a credit card or by cash. For a credit card payment, the system validates the card information; for a cash payment, the system may return change to the customer. Then, the system records the payment and updates the inventory. Finally, the customer receives a receipt from the system and then leaves the story with the items.
TASKS
(1) Provide a list of all nouns that you identified in the above narrative, and indicate the reasons that they are entities in the problem domain or not.
(2) Develop a Domain Model Class Diagram for the system. Multiplicities must be provided. Your model must be based on the above information, and built with the UML notations that are used in this subject. However, you can make reasonable assumptions to complete your solution.
Part B: Project Management (50 Marks)
TASK 1 (PROJECT EVALUATION) – 20 MARKS
The Custom Bike Company has set up a weighted scoring matrix for evaluation of potential projects. Below are five projects under consideration.
- Using the scoring matrix above, calculate the weighted average for each of the projects. (5 marks)
- Which project would you rate Highest / Lowest? (2 marks)
- If the weight for “Strong Sponsor” is changed from 2.0 to 5.0, will the project selection change? What are the three highest weighted project scores with this new weight? (3 marks)
- Why is it important that the weights mirror critical strategic factors? (5 marks)
- What are other methods to identify other projects how do these compare to the weighted scoring matrix? (5 marks)
TASK 2 (MANUAL NETWORK DIAGRAM CALCULATIONS) – 20 MARKS
You are completing a group assignment. Given the project network that follows, complete the forward and backward pass, compute activity slack and identify the critical path. Use this information to create a Gantt chart for the project. Be sure to show slack for non-critical activities.
- Manually complete the above calculations for ES, SL, LS, EF and LF – recreate the diagram with the values. (14 marks)
- Create the Gantt Chart for the project in a software application of your choice. (6 marks)
TASK 3 (EARNED VALUE MANAGEMENT) – 10 MARKS
Given the following information for a 12month project that is 2 months into development, answer the following questions. Recall that PV is the planned value, EV is the earned value, AC is the actual cost, and BAC is the budget at completion.
PV = $22,000
EV = $20,000
AC = $25,000
BAC = $120,000
- What is the cost variance, schedule variance, cost performance index (CPI), and schedule performance index (SPI) for the project? (2 marks)
- How is the project doing? Is it ahead of schedule or behind schedule? Is it under budget or over budget? (2 marks)
- Use the CPI to calculate the estimate at completion (EAC) for this project. Is the project performing better or worse than planned? (2 marks)
- Use the SPI to estimate how long it will take to finish this project. (2 marks)
