This paper is to be written from the point of view of a middle school nurse in a high poverty high crime area. This module addresses Health Impact Assessment (HIA) as a means of assessing the health impacts of policies, plans and projects in diverse economic sectors using quantitative, qualitative and participatory techniques. HIA helps decision-makers make choices about alternatives and improvements to prevent disease/injury and to actively promote health. HIA helps decision-makers make choices about alternatives and improvements to prevent disease/injury and to actively promote health. Part of the report may include a risk assessment (identifying the hazard, identifying the health effects of the hazard and assessing the risk of human exposure to the hazard), a discussion of risk communication, as well as options for risk management. HIA is a practical approach used to judge the potential health effects of a policy, program or project on a population, particularly on vulnerable or disadvantaged groups. Recommendations are produced for decision-makers and stakeholders, with the aim of maximizing the proposal’s positive health effects and minimizing its negative health effects.

The final for this course is to be a written proposal of an HIA project for your area. Read through the resources, watch the videos, read your book, and think about what your area needs or what you think would provide a benefit to the population in your area. This may be the foundation to a project that you choose to try to implement in your area or based on your scholarly project (if appropriate). Take advantage of having to do the work and incorporate it into something you may use in the future. Research will need to be done to provide articles and support for your proposed HIA project. Examples, resources, and tools have been provided in the HIA module to get you started. The 6 Steps of the PEW HIA Process should be the resource for the headings in your paper; you will need to write to each heading. PEW Trust HIA Process https://www.pewtrusts.org/-/media/post-launch-
