The Four Zoas

Hello, this is for the same class about William Blake that I had the other essay written for. I’d like the tone and writing style to be consistent to the last one if possible. The professor gave us 3 prompts to choose from and they’re all about The Four Zoas by Blake. I got good feedback on the last essay, but the professor wanted it to be more focused on the writing by William Blake. So I would like this essay to be focused on the work “The Four Zoas” itself and for The Four Zoas to be quoted in the essay if possible. I’ve included the prompts given by the professor below.

1. Describe the Four Zoas and their Emanations. Who are they and what do they represent? How are they connected with the cosmogony in Blakes mythology? What seems to happen to them in The Four Zoas? Choosing to answer this set of questions asks you to conceptualize the Zoas and to speculate on their meaning as it relates to Blakes creative imagination. Keep in mind the origin of this term, which Damon explains in the Zoa entry in A Blake Dictionary. What is signified by the Zoas being living forms? And dont ignore the symbolic and numerologic ramifications of the number four

2. Northrop Frye says of Night the Ninth, There is nothing like the colossal explosion of creative power in the ninth Night of The Four Zoas anywhere else in English poetry (FS 305). For Frye, Blake unleashes an apocalyptic vision of great power at the end of his poem. Apocalypse, in Fryes reckoning, concludes the cycle initiated by creation and followed by redemption. Write an essay about the Last Judgment in The Four Zoas. How does Blake conclude his vision with Night the Ninth? What happens to the Four Zoas? How is their involvement tied in with the human imagination? To answer these questions, you will want to consider what Blake means by the Human form Divine.

3. Write an imaginary book review of The Four Zoas. (Something that never happened, since this poem was never published.) This assignment presents an opportunity to challenge your ignorance about the poem, but also to make the poem answer for its abundant confusions. Keep in mind that a good book review includes a summary of the work at hand, gives a sense of its context, provides examples of the craft displayed (or not) in the work, and passes judgment on it. For an extra challenge, you could approach this assignment satirically, as Blake himself probably would.
