Mandatory short writing assignment: Everybody must watch and write about one episode of the BBC show: Around the World in 80 Faiths.
Select one or more cultural areas that is/are different (do not choose Latin America) from your own heritage and watch at least 60 mins (5 segments in 1 hr episode) of the Around the World in 80 Faiths series.
Write about this documentary as part of your Comparative Religion Assignment, which you will do independently (see details below),

1. Write an introductory paragraph that:
a. defines religion and worldview, being sure to use anthropological terms, and being sure to define religion anthropologically and explain why anthropologists study it. (Cite any sources for definitions! Put exact words inside quotation marks and give a page number if you use someone elses exact words – even from the textbook. Avoid plagiarism.)
b. Integrate info from the textbook and from the lecture & readings, including at least one theoretical perspective (review anthropological thinkers perspectives on religion) for analyzing what youve viewed.
2. Write 1 – 2 good paragraphs of anthropological analysis and comparison to your own views, writing about 2 or 3 faith traditions that you learned about in your episode of Around the World in 80 Faiths:
a. What is interesting about them? What kind of religions are they? Who are the lead practitioners/specialists? (Use chapter keywords.) Note any rituals or other religious aspects discussed in class or defined in the textbook chapter on religion.
b. Which keywords/concepts are illustrated here and how? (Hint: See points of analysis on p. 372 of your textbook: beliefs, foundational stories, rituals, symbols, specialists, institutions, communities.)
c. How do the religions depicted compare to your own religious beliefs? (Even if you have none, that is a worldview, too.)
3. Write a concluding paragraph with your personal reflections and summarize what youve learned by looking at religion cross-culturally.
