typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font, exclusive of bibliography or the Works Cited list. Essays should be written according to the MLA style manual or an equivalent format. You are required to consult a minimum of three refereed, scholarly sources for this assignment, either books or articles. All sources consulted must be acknowledged in a Works Cited List, and all works cited must be accompanied by notes or bracketed citations identifying the relevant page numbers. Failure to comply with this regulation constitutes a breach of the universitys rule against plagiarism. Please number all pages except title pages and Works Cited pages.
tudents should approach this assignment as a combination of topical research and independent analysis. Students are required to think critically about the material and to respond imaginatively, but also in an informed way, to the texts and the stated topics. Work will be evaluated with an expectation of 1) cogent, persuasive argument, based on a solid knowledge and understanding of the texts under discussion; 2) independent critical and textual analysis supported by scholarly research; and 3) clear, correct written expression. Work that merely reiterates the ideas and observations found in critical sources or presented in lectures, without any indication of individual thought on the students part, will be deemed insufficient.
While the specific research requirement for this assignment is that you read and make use of a minimum of three refereed scholarly books or articles, you may want to use more. You do not need to employ your secondary sources in a heavy-handed way. You don’t need to summarize their arguments or “reply” to them, and you don’t need to build your thesis around them. Merely make use of them in whatever way works best for your essay: as supporting argument, as historical context, as evidence, as theoretical method, or as something to argue against. However, your use of research sources should not be so cursory that it is merely for show. Find a balance between paying too little attention to your sources and paying so much that you let your sources displace your own analysis or marginalize your own voice.
