Task
In 1959, Eamon de Valera was elected as Ireland’s president; a landmark occasion as he became the country’s third president and an Easter Rising hero had reached the highest position in the country. However, this move also marked de Valera’s failure to create an ‘economically self-sufficient, Irish speaking, all-Ireland republic’ (1) , a goal which was the driving force behind many of his actions during his time in Irish politics.
When Fianna Fail took power in 1932, their main goal was a self-sufficient Ireland; they wanted to establish Irish industries controlled by Irish industrialists (2) as well as, move away from an over dependence on Britain. They embarked upon a protectionist policy in economic dealings, and tariffs were introduced for a wide range of imported goods, mainly from Britain, the Free State’s largest trading partner by far (3) .
During the 1932 general election de Valera made numerous promises, one being to withhold land annuities owed to the UK for loans provided under the Irish Lands Act and agreed as part of the 1921 treaty. Acting upon this promise as the newly appointed role as President of the Executive Council, de Valera caused a trade war between the Irish Free State and the United Kingdom, which lasted from 1932-1938.
In retaliation to this decision, Britain imposed a heavy tariff on a variety of Irish exports(4) . The war that ensued was an unequal contest (5) and the Irish farming industry, in particular cattle, suffered greatly. The government urged the people of Ireland to support the cause, which in turn created a social divide. In a world that was slowly coming out of the Great depression and with Ireland suffering with emigration and high unemployment rates, this was a major risk to Ireland’s economy and by 1938, Ireland did suffer financial loss. There were some positive outcomes to the Economic War however, it was a bad start for de Valera and Fianna Fail’s government and all for de Valera’s quest for sovereignty.
