Task:
This project requires you to research a topic in the history of medicine within the lecture areas. You may choose any topic as long as it fits in those lecture topics (anatomy, physiology, disease, epidemics, etc) and is part of “Western medicine.” Write an essay between 2000-2500 words on a topic drawn from one of the themes covered in class.
Sources:
You need to find documents from outside of the course material. This requires you to use academic databases like America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts to find secondary articles. Secondary sources are written about history using documents and other material from the time under examination (those materials are called “primary sources”) You do not need to find primary sources for this research. You may use them if you wish, but it is not a requirement.
You must incorporate at least two of the seminar readings from the course into your paper, It does not mean your paper needs to be about the same topic as those articles, but rather that you need to draw connections between key themes in those articles and your research.
You are encouraged to research widely using credible academic material for this paper. Remember this is a history paper, so you should be emphasizing historical sources or sources written by historians. Use as many sources as you deem suitable to explore your topic. Your paper must use at least two readings from the course. The use of this material must be more than a vague reference that is not germane to the topic.
How to begin?
Start with a topic you find interesting. Read the course material (if any) related to this topic. I will follow some of Duffin’s sources if she has a chapter related to that topic (and she probably does). Determine if your topic is too broad or narrow. Then begin a broader search.
What not to do:
Do not begin this project with a foregone conclusion. If you approach the project with “I want to prove that…” then you are doing it wrong. You should approach your project with a question “what was the effect of?” “why did x happen?” “how did x become a thing?” etc. The source material you find will help you to answer that question. The answer to your question becomes your thesis, which you then support with the evidence you found.
