Paul (27) and Kylie (29) have been together for 6 years. They met at university. They have been living together for 1 year. They are both in jobs that they like. Since living together they have been fighting about money and future values such as buying a property, having children and travel goals. Paul grew up in Sydney, his parents had a happy marriage and he had an easy childhood. Financially they were comfortable. His mother stayed at home once the children were born. He is the youngest of three boys and is close to his brothers. Kylie, grew up in rural Victoria with her parents and one younger sister. Her father died when she was 12 in a head-on car accident. A legal case found that he was under the influence of drugs when he crashed and the other driver also died, so there was no significant life insurance payment for the family. Her mother never remarried and went into a depression for several years after her father’s death. Kylie needed to support her younger sister to help her cope with the loss. They were financially stressed. Kylie comes to counselling to seek help with her worries and discuss her concerns about why their relationship seems to have gone wrong since they moved in together.
Case study 2
Jamal is 25 and has been with his partner Dan, who is 35, for 6 years. Jamal’s family does not know that he is gay, nor that he lives with his partner. Jamal had an affair that has ended but is feeling very guilty. Dan does not know about the affair. He says it is the biggest mistake of his life and feels tremendous guilt for hurting Dan. He has come from a conservative family and is under pressure to find a female partner and thinks the family will reject him if he tells them that he is gay. He is very confused and distressed about the affair, his family and his future but he tells you he is sure he wants to be with Dan forever.
Case study 3
al (22) is a support worker caring for Mikael (68). She has been working with Mikael for the past 18 months and they had got along well. He has had a stroke and has difficulty moving his left arm and left leg though he can walk with a stick. Two weeks ago Mikael touched Val inappropriately while she was helping him get up out of his chair. She reacted by telling him that was not acceptable and he apologised saying it was an accident. Since then she has found it hard to keep working with him. She has taken days off saying she is sick and has now asked her manager not to roster her on for any day or sleepover shifts for a month, taking unpaid leave. The manager has suggested Val come to see you for some counselling support. Val has not told the manager what Mikael did. Instead, she made up some excuses. Val tells you that when Mikael touched her inappropriately, it triggered awful memories of when she was a child and her grandfather touched her in the same way, which he did every time he could be alone with her at his home. She knew as a child what he did was wrong but did not know what to do about it. Her grandfather is still alive but she does not see him. She does not want to leave her job but knows she cannot continue unless she uses counselling to work through the trauma she experienced back in her childhood.
Case study 4
Sam moved out of home at 18 as he had a lot of battles with his father all his teenage years. He joined the air force. Although Sam did not serve in active duty he was involved in an accident on the air force base where he was injured and unable to continue in the air force. He was discharged and also given a disability pension. He completed university and became and engineer. He does have a mental health diagnosis of anxiety and PTSD. He is now 26 and had a brief relationship with Maria that ended 6 months ago. He is seeing you because Maria has just told him she is pregnant and that it is his baby and she wants him to take responsibility for it and to help her financially. He is overwhelmed and confused.

Kazuko is 45. She works as a lawyer and has a high-pressured role in a large law firm in Sydney. She worked for the company in her home city of Tokyo until 5 years ago when she thought it would be great to move to Sydney. She is single and is happy to live her own life. Being a compliant wife was not something she ever imagined. Whilst she loves her work and has a good social life, COVID lockdown hit her hard and she started to drink wine every evening to unwind after working from home alone all day. By the time lockdown ended, she was drinking a bottle a night and she knows it is not good for her health. She is seeing you to get some help as she has tried to cut back on the drinking now that she is back in the office in the day but is finding it very hard to reduce her intake.
