Project– Site Drainage Problem
Introduction
A residential project has additional stormwater discharging to the council drains. You are required to assess the additional runoff and check if the adopted piped system and site levels meet peak discharge requirements.
Brief
The Site Plan Drwg. WD.01 shows the existing residence extending to Pergolas 1 and 2 and a Studio/Toilet. The area north of these structures and the New carport was detained on-site prior to the re-development. Post-development, this area extending to the proposed boundary at the 18.28 m line will be discharging to the council drains. The council has set a 5% AEP (20 years) for all pre- and post-development stormwater discharge. The area north of Pergolas 1 and 2 will be paved with a maximum height RL 50.15 (refer to the Site Drainage Plan for site levels). The paved area will need to have falls to two separate 100 mm x 1 m Everhard Easydrains – Polymer channels and grates. The first Easydrain will need to collect runoff from part of the pavement as well as half of Pergola 1 entering from a downpipe. The Easydrain nearer to the New Store will collect stormwater from the remainder of the new paving.
Roof runoff from the eastern half of the New Store and part of the Studio/Toilet enters the piped system from a downpipe north-east of the New Store. Runoff will need to be piped under the New Store with a 75mm uPVC pipe stormwater pipe cast in the concrete raft footing. The stormwater pipe subsequently runs into a proprietary Everhard 450 mm Series Pit (with a grated lid) located west of the New Store prior to discharging through the kerb to the street water table. The open area between the New Store/Store/Toilet and the existing fence will also be paved, falling to a separate pit and may be ignored. The roof runoff from the western half of the New Store will also discharge to a separate piped system from a downpipe and may be ignored. The Everhard Easydrains have 75 mm diameter “Tee” outlets under their base, which will need to be connected to the main 75 mm uPVC stormwater pipe. The 450 mm pit inlet and outlet levels can be customised to obtain the optimum falls and site requirements. The Site and Drainage Plan Dwg No. SP1 shows reduced levels (RLs) to determine the falls to the paving and site drainage.
Task
A. In a team of up to three (3) you are required to determine the required paving and pipe levels and transitions. You will need to determine;
1.The location of the two Easydrains.
2.The location of the 450 mm pit and the inlet and outlet invert levels.
3.The water table level at the design point.
4.The sub-catchment areas contributing to each part of the stormwater runoff.
B. You will need to draw;
1.A plan of the sub-sub-catchment showing the drain and pit locations, part areas and pipe layout.
2.A plan and a longitudinal section of the piped drainage system showing the pit levels and invert levels at critical points and the HGL starting at the 450 mm pit. All drawings are to be produced using drafting software and exported as a PDF.
3.You may assume that the Easydrains may fill to the top during the design 5% AEP storm that is why consideration of the HGL needs to only start from the 450 mm pit.
C. You will need to conduct regular team meetings where;
1.You will discuss the design issues and the required documentation.
2.You will decide and accurately define what part of the design and documentation you will be undertaking.
3.You will need to maintain a detailed team meeting register using Microsoft Excel or Word to record date, item discussed, actions and who will be delegated to undertake the actions.
5.If the typing of the script is undertaken by more than one team member, ensure you are using a template and have consistent formatting e.g. fonts, headings, indentation.
5.You will also need to complete the Peer Evaluation Tool for each team member.
Deliverables
1.The first two pages of this assessment i.e. the Cover Sheet and Marking Scheme.
2.A Short Technical Report; one report for the whole group. Follow the instructions given in the document How To_Short Technical Report.pdf and the student checklist at the end of that document. Include;
*The design calculations and calculations to determine the hydraulic grade line (HGL) from the 450 mm pit to the street water table done on appropriate calculation sheets (with 5 mm grid)
*Assume uPVC is equivalent to “Smooth Pipe” in the Moody diagram
*The design drawings and all supporting information in the Appendices
*Assessment of whether the site drainage system meets peak discharge requirements
*Minutes of team meetings and each member’s contribution in an Appendix
*You will also be emailed the Team Peer Evaluation Tool to complete in confidence and email back to the lecturer.
