Questions:
The quote ” People often see what they believe rather than believe what they see” (Santayana) is a very interesting one because it really makes you think on how you first judge a person or situation. I personally believe what I see then see what I believe due to personal interactions I’ve had in the past and future. I don’t have a mindset or a specific theory on judgments but we were always given such information about the way people talk, act or behave that sets us to believe that maybe they are either the best person or the worst. I have always been a spot on person on guessing how a person is then just saying ” oh, he/she isn’t acting much, they might be lonely or quiet”.
After doing the readings, Article 4, Pg 21(Wayne A.Lesko) , states when we make first impressions we look at ” how they act, how they look, the way they dress and talk” and that we ” pay attention to facial expressions and body movements”. This is something that is common amongst all of us. We are observers with our eyes and see everything that is happening around us and we start building our own perception on people if for example; they cross their legs, they are defiantly determined, straight forward, where as someone who just lays back is to be set as very calm, collective and chill person.
We often deal with Fundamental Attribution Error: “see what you want to see” (Article 4,pg21,Wayne A,Lesko) which I believe to be true. We rather want what we want then accept what we get.
While I was listening to the Ted Talk, Rory Sutherland brought up a good point and showed a slide saying
” We too often forget,
1) Things are not what they are; they are what we think they are
2) Things are what we compare them to
3) Yet we make Psychology subordinate to everything else
4) Psychological value is often the best kind”
Which I agree 100% on because of the way we have injected ourselves with these type of judgments on how we see things.
