some examples of major healthcare programs to speak about

Medicare- available to those eligible for Social Security who are aged 65 years and older, and those suffering from ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease). This is a high cost sharing federal program.

Medicaid- available to those that meet the federal and state income poverty level and eligibility category. This a federal/state program with nominal cost sharing.

The State Childrens Health Insurance Program- joint state-federal program to provide coverage to poor and near-poor children up to the age of 18. Some states have had the option of creating this program as a Medicaid expansion- for those on higher income levels.

DoD Tricare- composed of two healthcare programs operated by the Dept. of Defense. Provides services to active duty and their families, retirees under the age of 65 and those who meet the supplemental coverage criteria over the age of 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

The Veterans Health Administration-designed to meet the healthcare needs of US Veterans- who make up 10% of the US population. VHA population is generally older, low-income, with chronic illnesses. Approximately 20% has sought mental health services and substance abuse support.

Indian Health Service Program- an agency within the Dept. of Health and Human Services. Provides health care services to the federally recognized American Indian and Alaskan native tribes- more than 557 tribes in 35 states. Approximately 30% recipients live below poverty level and have not completed high school.
