After this lab you should be able to:
Critically evaluate utility of quantitative MRI compared with normal ‘weighted’ imaging, and give example sequences for the forme
Part 1: Quantitative T1 estimation
This first section introduces T1 estimation using inversion recovery. Please open the Matlab live script and look at the first section called ‘T1 estimation exercise’. The data file t1data.mat contains MRI images of the phantom in the photograph, using an inversion recovery pulse sequence. The data has size 64x64x26 – this is because each image has size 64×64 and there are 26 images obtained using different inversion delay times Ti ranging from
100ms to 4 sec (stored in vector ti). Remember that the signal from an inversion recovery sequence has the form: where S0 contains scaling factors due to proton density, echo time, sensitivity of the receiver coil,
etc. There is no fixed scale for the signal values that come from MRI. Read through the live script, and run the first section. It will pop out a figure window – you are supposed to click on a voxel in the image to select it for fitting. For whichever voxel you select, the code assembles the signal values obtained from each of the 26 images, and tries to fit them to the signal equation to get T1.
