Instructions

Your report must use a range of reference material (academic journals and books) and show clear evidence of your thinking through detailed critical evaluation. Any sources you have used to compile your reports such as journal articles, reference books, web pages, etc. must be properly referenced in the Harvard style. You are required to submit your work within the bounds of the University Infringement of Assessment Regulations (see your Programme Guide). You will receive no marks for work that is not your own. Structure your report clearly and indicate the task e.g. Task 1a)

Your submission for this assignment should be in the form of one report, approximately 2500 words. Supplementary diagrams may be included if necessary, providing they are correctly cross-referenced. Format is to be pdf only. This is an individual task.

Task 1

As a newly employed Maintenance Engineer, you must understand advanced maintenance strategies and evaluate if this will help the business satisfy the objectives listed above. As a result, you have been asked to compile a report which will address the following questions:

a) Identify three new advanced maintenance strategies which could be adopted by the business. Within your discussion, you must identify the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy. Marks will be awarded for clear and concise explanations which fully describe each strategy. (25 marks)

b) Following this, you are to select a strategy which may suit the business. With this selection, you are to identify how the strategy will assist the business in achieving its objectives. (15 marks)

c) Finally, you are to identify the resources which the plant will need to provide to be able to implement this strategy. These include human and operational elements.

Task 2

One of the key areas of any maintenance strategy is the identification of critical processes and their components. This would normally be part of any proactive maintenance plan. Moreover, if a failure has occurred, implementing a corrective action to reduce the chance of it happening again. These two key areas can be developed by implementing an improvement tool such as FMECA.

As part of your proposal, you are to complete the following tasks:

a) Discuss FMECA, establishing this improvement tool in depth. You are to include:

• The format and procedure for using FMECA. (15 marks)
• Who takes part in the activity? (5 marks)
• What the outcome will be. (5 marks)
• What the benefits are to the engineering function and the organisation. (10 marks)

b) The motor which helps transmit drive to a pump. Demonstrate your understanding of the FMECA technique by applying FMECA to the motor shaft. You are to establish three different failure modes and for each one calculate the RPN value
