The purpose of an integrative literature review is to address a specific research problem using the critical selection and synthesis of existing research. As a dissertation, in the context of a PME, the integrative literature review supports the student-teacher in focusing on a specific problem or question that has emerged from the breadth of initial reading, and that requires deeper exploration and analysis of research papers. We have adapted the typical integrative literature review process (Whittemore and Knafl, 2005) for this dissertation, and it is envisaged that this detailed exploration will enhance students’ practice moving forward, and further their own research agenda as they enter the profession.
