This is a reaearch paper for a class named Gender Representations. My aim is to analyse the (in)dependent role of the main characters in Bear and incA Family Way and how masculinity plays a role either positive or negstive in these charscters’ lives.
Bear: the main female character is an independent woman, but always in need of love to the point she sees herself in love with a bear. The bear represents the male persona, so to what extent is she really independent? We need to discuss that in depth using specific parts of the novel + gender theories (male and female) to support this idea.
A Family Way: the main character is a gay man who has two female friends who become his family. These to ladies are in couple, and would love to have a baby. Then, again to what extent are they really “male” independent? They still need the male figure to be ablevto get pregnant, even if itvis just his semen. There is still an idea of depence despite their lives without the “need” of men. We need to discuss that in depth using specific parts of the novel + gender theories (male, female, and queer theories) to support this idea.
