Case Studies
Provide a solution to this case study as a Human Performance expert, considering only three of the numbered questions below. Your entire solution should be 700-1000 words, and each numbered question response should have at least 200 words. The total word count cannot include the list of sources you used to help answer the questions.
Make sure to use complete sentences, get an accurate word count, and use the spelling/grammar checkers.
Number your answers according to the question you are addressing.
Provide context, use complete sentences, but do not restate the entire question. Use the information from the course materials, your weekly writing, and the in-class discussions.
List websites, textbooks, research articles, review articles, or any other source you used to answer the case study. Do not use in-text citations. You should look both inside and outside the course resources I provided; think of it as a challenge to find new, high-quality information that we did not cover in the class.
1. What are the underlying physiological or biomechanical issues related to this case study (environment, subject, other) that are relevant to the tactical athlete? Explain in detail.
• Are there tests or screening measures associated with the physiological and/or biomechanical issues?
• Are there combined issues, and if so, how are they additive?
• Are there issues related to equipment selection or fit?
2. Is there immediate action (emergency) that should be taken for this individual? If so, explain in detail.
3. What are the other non-immediate actions that need to be taken (short-term)? Such actions might include referrals (be specific, note follow-up). Referrals are important in many cases, so make sure to “stay in your lane”.
4. Could measures have been taken to reduce the likelihood of this occurrence or its severity (training, acclimation, long-term follow-up to prevent reoccurrence, other)? Explain how these measures would help the problem.
5. Is there other important information that you would need to better solve this problem? If so, explain in detail what information you need and how it would help you.
The Case Study will be based off the information below.
Class book: https://u1lib.org/book/11843183/bc8fc1
(Chapters 5 and 6 talk about cold exposure)
You will use the book and any other resources to help with the case study.

Tactical age: 2 years

Environmental detail: Cold Exposure
Sergeant Sargent is a 24-year-old male that is assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California. Prior to joining the Marine Corps, he lived his whole life in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and rarely experienced temperatures below 65°F (18°C). Currently, it is the month of January and his unit is deployed to St. Petersburg, Russia. The average high temperature is 26°F (-3°C) and the average low temperature is 16°F (-8°C).
Sergeant Sargent is equipped with the standard military issue cold weather boots, but refuses to wear gloves because he feels they negatively affect his ability to effectively fire his rifle. While outdoors on patrol, he notices that his fingers and toes become greatly affected by the extremely cold temperatures. After a period of about 20 minutes, he notices that his fingers and toes tend to go through cycles of cold and rewarming.
