Student 1: This week I have chosen the Grand Hyatt of the World of Hyatt.
This family of hotels and the Grand Hyatt in particular is ideal for a weekend getaway, large celebration (e.g. wedding, family reunion, school reunion, conferences etc.), and definitely for business travelers. The Grand Hyatt offers large meeting spaces, office space during your stay or meeting, and catering options as well as restaurants/ bars. Outside of the business traveler, this hotel is great for a weekend “staycation” as well. I will say I am biased; this is my go to hotel/ hotel chain even for a weekend getaway from no. No special occasion needed really. These hotel caterers to a multitude of travelers, while it may not be great for extended stays as the total can accumulate quickly. I do not believe it is the ideal hotel for families with small children, it is geared towards an adult crowd, but you can bring your family.
Amenities I look for is purely dependent on what I am traveling for. If it is business- safety (while maybe not an amenity, but important regardless of what I am traveling for), WiFi, office space (computer/ printer/ scanner), pool/ hot tub/ steam room, comfortable bed/ bedding, and a bar/ restaurant. Having these amenities are important to me because it offers convenience mostly, not having to go further than a few floors and can go back to the room without worrying about a taxi etc. Location is also important to go exploring. For leisure, it is pretty much the same, but not worried about an office space. The same could be said for military travel. At the end of the day regardless of what the purpose of travel is for, at the end of the day, I want to come back to a room that is comfortable and though not home, has most of the comforts of home.
If I were to start a career in the hotel industry, I would certainly want to start in a full service hotel. I say this because they are among some of the highest standards of the industry. If you can make it there, you can make it at a limited service hotel. There are also additional services offered there that make it a bit easier to cross train and learn becoming well rounded. This being housekeeping, restaurant service, bar service, guest services, maintenance etc. To become a general manager knowing the entire operation is beneficial to your career as well as management of staff because you have a better understanding of the challenges and rewards. I would certainly take a GM who has worked every area, well, than a GM hired from college any day. I am a firm believer that if you want to do the job, you have to understand the jobs, which makes the business successful. Also having this experience can help you manage a limited service hotel and bring new ideas to the hotel. Ultimately, if you want to move throughout and up the industry, you have to be well versed in the industry. Understanding everything from folding a sheet to P&L statements.
Student 2: I have chose the Marriot Vacation club hotels from, you guessed it, the Marriot Family of brands.
The Marriot Vacation Club hotels are the “travelers paradise” of hotels. They are located in high tourism areas such as Las Vegas, Vail, CO, and Lake Tahoe. They also have multiple locations on the coast of Florida, Hawaii, California, and Costa Rica. They very much focus on both the “Up & Down” aspect of their hotels. With exterior architecture to match the setting (cozy cabin, topical paradise, beachfront villa, upscale city dwelling, etc.), the rooms are meant to feel luxurious, and the amenities are meant to impress. Large pools, spas, jacuzzis, and some even have golf courses. They see to match the geographic atheistic with their interior decor, both in the lobby and in the rooms.
These resorts are meant for the vacation family, couple, or solo traveller. The “vacation vibe” of the hotel is inviting to most, and I could see business travelers wanting to stay here, but it is not necessarily meant for business. Although they do not seem to fit a long-term stay (more than 2-3 weeks), they are meant for stays longer than 2-3 days. I say the rooms are not meant for extended stays because most of the rooms do not have in-room kitchen amenities.
What I looked for in a hotel 5 years ago is drastically different than what I look for in a hotel now because of my kids. 5 years ago, I could stay almost anywhere and be happy; a business hotel, a vacation resort, even a hostel. Today, I only will stay at family friendly hotels. My kids love to swim, so a pool is a must-have. I also look for places with a continental breakfast so I can grab an early morning coffee for myself, and some fruit for the kids. I look for hotels that are very clean, and are located in safe geographic areas. I Also look for rooms that have multiple security measures in place, and have on-site parking. Being in walking distance to attractions and restaurants is a bonus.
Student 3: For this weeks topic discussion is about a 4 star resort in lake placid N.Y and iy is called the lake placid lodge . The resort is about a three mile drive from town. It has a rustic log cabin look on the put side and its has all wooden floors that are all polished along with the dressers, tables and chairs. Mot all of the rooms come with a heated spa and shower with seven spraying heads to ensure a luxury shower. The property has a full service diner and serves all the home made soups and salads of your choice and a full menu of dinner items. The room also came with a small refrigerator full of liquor in tiny bottles of course along with soda drinks and also a full coffee pot for those who drink coffee early in the morning or late at night. The hand soaps are of course Hampton brand which can be found in any establishment in the United States and around the world today.
The lodge is also located by a lake and if you look strait across the lake you will see the lodge where Shana Twain grew up. The lodge does offer canoes for those who are of age to take a canoe out for a spin. The rooms do also come with a working television along with a telephone.
A basic room with some of the amenities the price starts at $395.00 on up depending on how many beds that are needed and the best room that includes everything will cost you at least $1500.00 per night. A great place to stay if you are looking for luxury.
