Complete a statistical critique of an empirical study
on cyberbullying.
GOAL: – The purpose of this learning activity is to
assist the student in using statistical concepts to critically evaluate the
efficacy and usefulness of an empirical (published in professional journal)
study that relates to social work practice.
Activity: The critique should be APA style, typed (double spaced)
and should address the following areas:
a. Purpose of the study.
b. Utilization of null and research hypotheses? If not
stated, what are the implied hypotheses?
c. Identification of the dependent & independent
variables and level(s) of measurement.
d. Type and appropriateness of sample (e.g. random
sample, non-random).
e. Statistical procedures (types of statistics used:
descriptive and/or inferential.
f. What are the study’s primary research findings?
g. Were effect size statistics computed? What is the
effect size statistic? If an effect size statistic could have been computed and
wasn’t, what are your thoughts about that?
h. What are the limitations of the study?
i. Personal critique (comment on the importance of the
study, and how the statistics course helped you to critique this study).
