Choose any 1 of the prompts below. Write an essay of at least 500 words on your chosen topic. Due Date: Dec 3rd at 11:59pm uploaded through the Turnitin assignment in Moodle.
1. Prompt 1: In each of the four Platonic dialogues we went over in class, Plato presents at least one significant problem that Socrates is trying to address, e.g. questioning what makes an object good or pious in the Euthyphro, wondering how one can come to learn virtue in the Meno, and so on. In an essay, pick one of the dialogues and identify a central problem presented in, making sure to explain how Socrates explains it to his interlocutor. Then, give Socrates solution, if he presents one. Finally, either defend or attack Socrates answer, or if he does not give one, present your own possible answer.
2. Prompt 2: In their work, Hobbes and Rousseau present two diametrically opposed political philosophies and portrayals of human society. In an essay, compare and contrast their different views, including references to key parts of the text. Then, either defend Hobbes against Rousseau, or defend Rousseau against Hobbes, making sure to clearly explain why you believe one presents a better philosophical analysis of politics than the other.
3. Prompt 3: Take one of the 4 philosophers of moral philosophy that we covered in class: Mill, Aristotle, Kant, and Nietzsche. Write an essay explaining one of those thinker’s moral philosophy (or lack thereof), making sure to add careful detail where appropriate. Then, defend that chosen theory against claims that one of the other philosophers might make against it (e.g., defend Kant against Nietzsche, Mill against Kant, etc.).
4. Prompt 4: Take one of the critical philosophers that we discussed (Marx, Sartre, Fanon, Beauvoir, etc) and write an essay explaining the details of that philosophers critique (e.g. Marx on capitalism, Fanon on colonialism, etc). Then make an objection against that critique, and finally make your own case for or against that critique.
