2 PArts: Explication & Evaluation
EXPLICATION:
You will have a two-part explication, recommended to be done in two paragraphs. The first should argue the philosopher’s position concerning what is required in order to be ethical which may also involve avoiding corruption. The second assert what the philosopher’s position would be on the worthwhile life, the meaningful life, and the successful life. When you meet with me to get your position paper back, attached will be a ‘use in final’ advice sheet with some suggestions for the “core” of the philosopher’s position on what is involved in being ethical, as well as some questions to consider in order to develop your argument for what his/her position would be on the three “lives.” There will be a lot of comments on your position paper concerning what you can do to move the position forward in the final and take the ideas further.
EVALUATION:
Finally, you need to evaluate the philosopher’s position. This is something that we haven’t done rally thus far, and so it is a new task for the final paper itself. But you’ve touched on this. . Evaluation does not have anything to do with agreeing or disagreeing with the philosopher; that will not be the point, so please avoid that phrasing. Evaluation is about drawing out the strength of a philosopher’s position, but also considering a potentially problematic aspect of the position.
So start with the positive: What is the strength of the position? I The real strength in a philosopher’s position is what it really brought home for you, what you particularly took to heart. Well, that was the lesson for self, right? That might change somewhat from the position paper to the final, but it isn’t completely foreign and you’ve got a spot to build from. This will be developed more in the final than is the position papers. Take it further by considering how this specifically will impact you here at LMU, in your major, in considering service opportunities, etc. Don’t be glib here, but rather take it as an opportunity to reflect on what you want your undergraduate experience to mean to you and why. How is this going to embody that lesson from that philosopher?
