Summarize your personal and professional growth since the beginning of your RN-BSN program
Since beginning my RN-BSN program, I have experienced a great deal of personal and professional growth. Through my studies and experiences, I have gained a deeper understanding of myself and my nursing practice. In this essay, I will provide an overview of my personal growth since the beginning of my RN-BSN program, reflect on professional growth experiences throughout my RN-BSN program, and discuss what I have learned about myself and my nursing practice since starting my RN-BSN program.
Since beginning my RN-BSN program, I have experienced substantial growth and development as a healthcare professional. According to L Haggard‐Duff et al. (2020), nurses are increasingly expected to have a “broader scope of practice” and “enhanced competencies” in order to meet the demands of the modern healthcare system. As such, my program has provided me with many opportunities to learn the necessary skills and gain the knowledge needed to succeed in the nursing field. I have learned to better utilize evidence-based practice, improve my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and develop my leadership and collaboration capabilities. By being exposed to a variety of advanced topics and new ideas, I have been able to expand my knowledge of the nursing profession and become a better-informed and more effective nurse. In addition, I have become much more confident in my ability to care for patients and provide them with the best possible care. Overall, my RN-BSN program has been instrumental in helping me to become a better, more competent nurse and I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided me.
Reflection on professional growth experiences during my RN-BSN program was a vital part of my educational journey. According to KL Rush, S Waldrop, C Mitchell, and C Dyches in their book Principles and Issues of Professional Nursing (2005), reflection can facilitate growth and development of the professional nurse. During my program, engaging in reflective activities allowed me to take ownership of my learning and to explore my own values and beliefs. Furthermore, it encouraged me to analyze my experiences from different perspectives to gain a better understanding of myself and my professional identity. I was able to identify areas of growth, as well as areas for further development. Engaging in reflective activities enabled me to develop a stronger sense of self-awareness, which helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a professional nurse. Additionally, reflection enabled me to identify and recognize the impact of my actions and behaviors on my patients, colleagues, and the organization. Overall, I found that engaging in reflective activities was an important part of my professional growth and development.
My journey through my RN-BSN program has been filled with invaluable lessons. According to C Delaney and B Piscopo in the Journal of Professional Nursing (2007), “nursing education helps nurses to develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for competent practice”. This has certainly been true in my experience. Throughout my educational program, I have learned more than just the theory and history of nursing; I have acquired the skills I need to properly assess and treat patients in a variety of settings. I have also learned the importance of self-reflection and self-care, both of which are essential components of professional nursing practice. Thus, through my RN-BSN program, I have become better equipped to provide high-quality care to my patients. Moreover, I have become more aware of my own capabilities and limitations as a nurse, enabling me to practice in a more effective and efficient manner. In addition, I have been able to develop my interpersonal and communication skills, both of which are essential for successful collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Ultimately, my RN-BSN program has been a valuable learning experience that has greatly enhanced my nursing practice.
Since the beginning of my RN-BSN program, I have seen tremendous growth both professionally and personally. I have acquired a greater understanding of the healthcare field, along with confidence in my skills and the ability to apply them to the workplace. My critical thinking and problem-solving skills have improved and I have developed a new appreciation for the inter-disciplinary collaboration necessary for the best patient outcomes. I feel more capable as a nurse and I know that I am more prepared to take on the ever-changing challenges of the nursing profession.
