Self-awareness includes the use of guided imagery, reflection, personal and social feedback. These components allow the student to have a better understanding of themselves and others (patients, family members, and clinicians (Rasheed, Younas, and Sundus, 2018).
Furthermore, critical thinking skills are developed as well as meeting the AACN Essentials: Implications for Nursing Regulation (Giddens, Douglas, Conroy, 2022).
For this assignment, students will create and utilize an ongoing journal that meet the outlined criteria. Entries should be dated and include the following components – intrapersonal, relational, extrapersonal, and contextual. This means that the experience had meaning through an interaction with another and was encountered in the pediatric clinical experience. The described situation should be meaningful upon a later reflection of it. Thus, it should include the four steps of Tanner’s (2006) clinical judgement – noticing, interpreting, responding, and reflection. Similar entries should not be repeated unless they are expanding on an earlier encounter.
Self- Reflection Assignment Criteria:
Create a journal beginning the first week of the course through week 7– may use a word document
o Use APA format
o Include a title page
o Level I headings to include Introduction and Conclusion
o Level II section headings for each week ( Week 1, Week 2, etc..)
o References are not required but should be utilized if needed
Provide a meaningful entry each week as described above
o No word limit
o Should denote a variety of thoughts, feelings and behaviors
Summarize an overall self-awareness of personal thoughts and/or behaviors in the final week (week 8) to include:Value of the clinical experience – not an evaluation; rather, key “take away” to further your professional development –
successes and challenges (how to become more disciplined, improve communication skills, actions needed to manage
difficulty situations)
o Identify a theoretical framework or concept to align your future practice pattern for improving patient outcomes
