In Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, the tragic hero is a topic of much debate among scholars and readers alike. Some argue that Julius Caesar is the tragic hero, while others argue that it is Brutus. After careful analysis of the play, it is my belief that Brutus is the true tragic hero. Firstly, a tragic hero is defined as a character who possesses a tragic flaw, or hamartia, that leads to their downfall. Brutus’ tragic flaw is his idealism and his belief in the greater good. He believes that killing Caesar is necessary to save Rome from tyranny and restore the republic. However, his idealism blinds him to the consequences of his actions, and he underestimates the chaos that will ensue after Caesar’s death. This ultimately leads to his downfall, as his actions spark a civil war that tears Rome apart. On the other hand, Caesar is not a tragic hero because he does not possess a tragic flaw. He is a victim of circumstance, and his downfall is brought about by the actions of others. While he may be a flawed character, he is not flawed in a way that leads to his tragic downfall.
