Satire and Union Rhetoric

For this assignment, you will write a satirical short story. Satire is fiction, so this is not a standard academic essay. There is no formal thesis statement or topic sentences or citations or MLA format. You are writing a fictional story that satirizes some work-related topic and involves both pro- and anti-union rhetoric.

Satire is fiction with a purpose: to ridicule something in the real word using humor. Satire must have specific targets in the real world which the fictional text exposes and mocks. Your target must be related to something in the first five chapters of Work Won’t Love You Back. You can choose any of the type of jobs (domestic work, teaching, retail, or non-profits) or issues raised in the chapters as your inspiration and target. Your story must also use union rhetoric. Incorporate both anti-union and pro-union rhetoric into your satire.

Other than the target and union rhetoric, you have total creative freedom in terms of plot, language, genre, setting, characters, etc… Of course, satire always includes certain literary techniques such as exaggeration, caricature, parody, hyperbole, and verbal irony. Review the module on satire and the satirical texts you read for examples and explanation of satirical techniques.

Lastly, even though this is a fictional story unlike the previous essay, you still must organize your essay into paragraphs and develop your story with details, description, dialogue, etc… Paragraphs should have a single main topic or event. You will lose the reader without thoughtful organization.
