Good evening class,
The global societal issue I have chosen to research for my week 5 Final Paper is International Drug Trafficking. I decided to go with this topic because it is something my contract deals with on a daily basis. We work hand in hand with CBP, ICE, and other government agencies all along the border as well as across the nation and are constantly seizing items with hidden compartments in some of the craziest places in vehicles – tires, gas tanks, floorboards, dashboards, steering wheel, seats, even additional compartments that weren’t there to begin with on vehicles, vessels and aircrafts, and have seen drugs try to come into the country via vegetables down in the southern part of Texas and mixed into honey in Florida and California. Although there were other topics that piqued my interest, I decided to go with drug trafficking since I deal with this on a daily basis.
One way to identify whether a source is scholarly is by identifying where the information came from. By utilizing the CRAAP test, this can help me narrow down articles that are relevant and current to my topic. By using scholarly sources, you know that the research is valid, and not someone’s viewpoint or personal opinion on the matter. I must also take into consideration the credibility of a journal or publisher.
“Exploring the Influence of Drug Trafficking Gangs on Overdose Deaths in the Largest Narcotics Market in the Eastern United States” is an article where the authors address larger U.S. neighborhoods. Most large U.S. neighborhoods with high poverty are drug markets, leading to accidental overdose deaths and gun violence (Johnson et al., 2020). This happens in these neighborhoods because they lack social services, coordinated law enforcement, and housing blight. With the open drug market availability, gangs are formed to make the business run smoothly. Therefore, violence emanates from these guns as they compete for customers and strong territories for distribution. When an area has more gangs, it becomes easier for them to become international drug traffickers and distributors. This article fully supports my claim that international drug trafficking is a societal issue since these neighborhoods have become dangerous areas for humans.
“Sanctions by the Numbers: Transnational Crime and Drug Trafficking” is an article that shows drug trafficking as a transnational crime and a threat to national security. Most transnational criminal organizations acquire about 50% of their income from drug trafficking. The government has, therefore, in the past and currently tried to come up with sanctions and programs to curb these societal issues. However, drug trafficking is still a national threat to human safety despite all measures that have been enacted. There are over 60 countries involved in international drug trafficking on the American continent (Bartlett & Qphel, 2021). The Treasury has, therefore, enacted transnational crime-related sanctions against individuals and entities. This article supports my claim since it addresses how drug trafficking has threatened national security despite sanctions put in place to control it.

International Drug Trafficking: A Global Challenge
Introduction
International drug trafficking is a complicated and extensive global problem that is characterized by the smuggling of drugs over national borders for sale, distribution, and use. A complex and diverse issue, the illegal trafficking in exam questions is frequently carried out by highly organized criminal organizations. It is unquestionably necessary to conduct more research in this area given the serious hazards it poses to societal welfare, national security, and public health. The ethical repercussions of this problem are substantial because it feeds a vicious circle of illegal behavior that harms many people and communities while also aggravating addiction, violence, and societal instability.
Thesis Statement
The problem of international drug trafficking necessitates a thorough investigation and use of remedies that successfully address the underlying factors, societal effects, and difficulties law enforcement encounters in dealing with this phenomenon. It is possible to develop strategies to lessen the negative effects of this global problem by looking at drug trafficking networks, assessing the effectiveness of international drug control systems, and comprehending the complex relationship between drug trafficking, land use change, and environmental degradation.
Background
International drug trafficking is a pervasive and complicated global issue that involves the clandestine movement and trade of illegal substances across international borders, typically orchestrated by highly organized criminal networks. The complexity of this problem poses a serious threat to national security, global social stability, and the general well-being of the populace. Beyond the realms of substance addiction and violence, the effects of drug trafficking have a significant negative influence on people and communities all over the world by fostering a vicious cycle of criminal activity.
In addition to promoting the spread of drug addiction, the illicit transportation of drugs, which is made possible by highly organized criminal syndicates, also fosters an environment marked by violent crimes, pervasive corruption, and societal upheaval. Drug trafficking has a wide-ranging impact on society, affecting areas including healthcare institutions’ ability to manage substance abuse-related issues, the effectiveness of law enforcement, and people’s sense of security (Tellman et al., 2020).
Additionally, the illegal commerce in issue has the negative consequences of causing regional instability, raising the rate of poverty, and eroding governance structures. Communities become more vulnerable to exploitation and instability when there is violence and territorial conflict, which worsens the state of the social fabric. International drug trafficking is a widespread problem that demands comprehensive attention and team efforts to reduce its serious and far-reaching effects (Zaami et al., 2020).
Argument for Solutions
Understanding Drug Trafficking Networks
The study carried out by Bright, Koskinen, and Malm (2018) offers a thorough investigation of the intricate systems that control how global drug trafficking networks operate. This paper explains the organizational elements, operational strategies, and tactical moves made by illegal organizations engaged in such criminal activities, giving significant insights into the complex dynamics of the black market for illegal narcotics. This study offers vital insights that can considerably boost law enforcement organizations’ and legislators’ initiatives in combating the problem of international drug trafficking through a thorough investigation of these elements.
By carefully analyzing the structural components of drug trafficking networks, the research significantly contributes to the field. This examination looks at the intricate web of relationships, roles, and power structures that exist inside these organizations. Law enforcement agencies are better able to understand the susceptibilities of the network and crucial points for intervention by examining the complex dynamics among many players involved in the illicit trade of drugs, including producers, traffickers, distributors, and financiers.
Additionally, the research looks at how these networks have evolved and changed over time. Drug trafficking criminal organizations are dynamic in nature, always changing to surpass the efforts of law enforcement organizations. The study of Bright, Koskinen, and Malm makes important advances in our comprehension of the flexible, varied, and vast nature of these networks. For authorities to forecast and proactively minimize future threats, they must have this understanding (Bright et al., 2018).
This study emphasizes the critical need for an all-encompassing approach to the world’s drug trafficking problem. This assertion emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive strategy to address this complicated issue, one that goes beyond the traditional approaches used by law enforcement alone. Although law enforcement is essential in the fight against drug trafficking, it is necessary to support these activities with thorough policy changes that address the root causes of the problem. These reasons for the continued existence of the drug trade include the need for illegal narcotics, economic inequality, and different social variables.
The study carried out by Bright, Koskinen, and Malm makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how to fight global drug trafficking. Law enforcement organizations and legislators now have the tools they need to create more precise and informed plans thanks to technology. This also emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts and a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional enforcement restrictions to handle the intricate, lucrative, and continuously growing phenomenon of international drug trafficking. With this knowledge, the international community is better equipped to address this important problem and lessen its considerable effects on society, public health, and security (Johnson et al., 2020).
Global Drug Control System
The primary focus of Hall’s 2017 analysis was the future course of the international drug control system and the effects of national drug prohibitions. This emphasizes the significance of adopting a complete viewpoint that takes into account the legal and ethical components of drug control, making it an important resource for academics and politicians. Development of global drug control system build an effective approach to minimize the instances of illegal drug trafficking (Hall, 2017).
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is possible to conclude that international drug trafficking is a complex worldwide issue with wide-ranging effects on society, including the environment and public health. It is essential to have a thorough understanding of drug trafficking networks, assess the global drug control system, and acknowledge the complex relationship between drug trafficking, its socioeconomic effects, and environmental degradation in order to effectively address this challenge. It is possible to work toward minimizing the negative effects connected with the global development of the illicit drug trade through the identification and analysis of these essential components as well as the application of a complete approach.
