Nursing theory plays a major role in the activities carried out to improve patient outcomes. The nursing theory can be used to support evidence-based practice through various approaches such as integration of the theoretical underpinnings into clinical practice, research and decision making processes. Therefore, it is important for nurses to identify the most suitable theory to be applied for a particular patient care problem. Therefore, this presentation focuses on theoretical framework to support evidence. This presentation has various sections including; identification of the theory, an issue in selected are of advanced nursing practice, theory as a framework for EBP, and conclusion
Identification of Theory
qThe theory of focus is Health Promotion model
qIt was developed by Nola Pender in 1980s
qIt is used to understand and predict health behaviors.
qIt asserts that each person has a unique personal characteristics

The theory identified and which will be the focus of this presentation is the Health Promotion Model which is a nursing theory developed by Nola Pender in the 1980s. This model has been used for years in various patient care settings in understanding and predicting the health behaviors of individuals and in the promotion of healthier lifestyle among individuals and populations (Wilson, 2021). According to this model, every person has a unique personal characteristics and experiences which in turn affect the actions. In addition, various variables for behavior specific knowledge can be modified through nursing actions. Therefore, health promoting behavior is the desired behavioral outcomes and it is the endpoint in the Health Promotion Model. It has various concepts such as behavioral outcomes, behavior-specific cognitions, individual characteristics, health protection and health promotion.

Health Promotion Model is relevant to the selected are of advanced nursing practice. The theory asserts that individual and population health is influenced by a combination of social, psychological and biological factors. Advanced practice nurses are expected to holistically attend to patients by addressing social, mental and physical aspects, therefore, this model aligns with such an approach. The Health Promotion Model also emphasizes on the health-promoting behaviors, which also makes it relevant. The advanced practice nurses are better place to encourage and educate patients and their family members to adopt healthier lifestyle and behaviors such as healthy eating and regular exercise (Chen and Hsieh, 2021). It is also relevant since it underlines the importance of cultural competence. The nurses in most cases have to attend to patients from different and diverse cultural backgrounds, hence they must be culturally competent to effectively attend to them and offer culturally sensitive care. This theory can also serve as a framework the nurses when formulating education and counselling sessions and programs to help improve patient outcomes.

The issue related to nursing specialty is obesity. This is a condition mainly characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat. It affects people across all ages, from children to adults. Therefore, there is a need to use appropriate strategies to control them. It is important to explore some of the negative impacts that obesity may have on health outcomes. One of such impacts is cardiovascular health where obesity increases the risk of heart diseases such as heart attacks and artery disease (Koliaki et al.,2019). The condition can also lead to type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It also impacts respiratory health since it can easily lead to sleep apnea and compromised lung function. It can also lead to various mental health complications such as increased risk of anxiety and depression and low self esteem due to body size and shape.
Theory As Framework For EBP
qThe theory can be used to support EBP for obesity.
qIt will entail various stages including:
qAssessment of patient characteristics and experiences
qRecognition of behavior-specific cognition and affect
qFormulation of plan and achievable goals
qEducation and counselling
qOutcome evaluation.
The Health Promotion Model can be used to support EBP to address obesity. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to have adequate knowledge on how the theory can be applied in a particular situation or setting. It is important to fist assess the characteristics and experiences of the patients with obesity. These factors may influence how they make they health related decisions such as how to manage their weight (Turner & Reed, 2023). It is also key to recognize behaviors-specific cognition and affect which may help in identifying facilitators or barriers to adopting healthier behaviors. The next step would entail collaborating with the patient to formulate a plan and set achievable goals before offering counselling and health education to the patients. Such education may cover areas such as health risks connected to obesity and why the patients should focus on weight management. Monitoring and feedback and provision of continued support is then accomplished before evaluating the outcomes.

In Week 7, students will create a PowerPoint slide show with notes pages to evaluate the use of a theory for an EBP issue or concern. In Week 8, students will create a recording of the presentation for the Peer Discussion thread.

Review the literature regarding issues or concerns within your selected nurse practitioner specialty.
Select a theory or theoretical model which is relevant to your nurse practitioner specialty and would offer a meaningful context for evidence-based practice surrounding the issue or concern which you identified.
