As part of professional practice, nurses must use clinical decision support systems (CDSS) that are part of health information technology. Nurses can also participate in the development or customization of CDSS by using knowledge bases, algorithms, and clinical decision rules. For this assignment, select one patient safety issue that involves medication administration. Using a computerized provider order entry (CPOE) system, research what clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) exist and how they could be incorporated in the electronic health record (EHR) workflow. The design of the CDSS must be interoperable with CPOE.

• Use primary sources published within the last 5 years. Provide citations and references for all sources used.

Directions:

Write a 1,000-1,250-word paper that provides the following:

1. Describe the patient safety issue related to medication administration.
2. Set up a search strategy to identify CDSSs that address the specific medication patient safety issue. Find two research articles, each on a different system that could be incorporated into the EHR.
3. Explain how you set up your search strategy. What keywords did you use in your search strategy? Did you expand on your keywords by adding wildcards or restricting the keywords to a phrase? Did you change your utilize filters or limiters?
4. Evaluate the articles and then synthesize a review of the literature that includes the pros and cons of the systems discussed in the articles.
5. Based on the evaluation of the two research articles, explain which CDSS would be the most feasible to integrate into the EHR.
6. Outline a plan for how the selected CDSS would be implemented and adopted into nursing workflow.
7. Evaluate how the health information exchange, interoperability, and integration of the selected CDSS will improve patient safety.
