After developing an interest in DIY Rory decided to renovate the garage adjacent to his house. He immediately decided that before commencing the work he would need to get something to hold the garage roof up while the conversion was under way. He went to Dave’s Hardware Store and said: ‘I need something to hold up my roof while I convert the garage’. Dave gave Rory a piece of strong-looking timber and said: ‘This should be strong enough to hold up most roofs’. On returning home, Rory put the piece of timber in place and commenced renovating his garage.
A short time later the timber broke under the strain and Rory’s garage roof collapsed causing severe damage. Rory was furious and went back into Dave’s shop to complain that the timber did not hold the roof up. Dave responded: ‘You never told me how big or heavy the roof was, how was I supposed to know what strength of timber you would need?’ Advise Rory
