Assignment Task

1. Define health promotion

2. Select one health promotion theory framework or model and critically analyse the strengths and limitations of this approach

Note:

  • Frameworks are simply the ways that interventions are expected to work. These are often expressed as models or figures and are sometimes called conceptual models, conceptual frameworks, logic models or logical frameworks.
  • The theory, ideally, SHOULD inform the framework, but sometimes authors do not make this link. So clearly describing the theory used and the framework used is sufficient.
  • It is not necessary to match the theories that have been introduced in the module to the intervention/programmes–authors may use different theories, and that is absolutely okay.

1. In the first part, you should write a reflective account using a reflective model. The account, should include an analysis of how you have progressed throughout the experience. Your reflective process should identify between one and three areas where you could have performed better – and at least one area where you performed well. Relevance of the experience to required levels of professional knowledge and competency (professional standards of practice, or workplace appraisal) should be included. (1000 words)

For example, you may wish to reflect upon your competency and behaviours in a specific situation such as:

  • Being involved in a mistake affecting a patients’ treatment or safety.
  • Managing a patient complaint.
  • Leading an underperforming team.
  • Reaching a team objective.
  • Other areas for reflection are acceptable.

2. In the second part, you should design a 12-month development plan, which will address deficits you have identified in your competencies – as described in part 1 (1 to 3 areas). The plan should identify your goals, what challenges you foresee to goal achievement and how you plan to overcome those challenges.

You may draw from the following documents to support your personal development planning:

  • Professional Diary or journal.
  • Professional Portfolio.
  • Professional guidelines for CPD.
  • Human Resource Appraisal Frameworks.

Healthy Public Policy

Discuss how healthy public policy can be applied to encourage behaviour change, reflecting on one health related public policy. Ensure that the following are described:

  • The effectiveness of healthy public policy in encouraging behaviour change.
  • Where the public policy was developed (for example, is it an international, national or local policy?).
  • The target population and behaviour being addressed.
  • The social determinants of health linked to the health behaviour being addressed.
  • A brief description of the policy, including any health promotion theories, module or frameworks that have been used by the authors of the healthy public policy if any.
  • The methods used to evaluate the success of the policy its outcome/results (for example, was it successful or not? Did the policy have a positive impact on behaviour change?)
