NUTR 325 Food and Culture
Exploring New Foods
Part 1: 75 points possible – Due on Wednesday, 5/1/24 by 11:59 p.m. on Web Campus
Part 2: 25 points possible – Due in class Thursday, 5/2/24 Discussion
This assignment involves moving out of your dietary comfort zone to try a new type of food (preferably ethnic cuisine) that you have never tried before. This could mean sampling a new individual ethnic food (e.g. a German pastry) or trying a new ethnic dish (e.g. a Thai appetizer or entree). If you would prefer to stick with a type of ethnic food you typically enjoy, then try eating something different from what you would normally choose (e.g. ordering a new entree at your favorite Indian restaurant).
Write a 2 page, double spaced, typed reflection on your experience using the following questions to guide you:
What type of food did you try?
Explain the details of the food you ate.
Go online and research the food you had and include one paragraph about the history and evolution of the food/dish. Does the food/dish have cultural significance? Please explain.
Why did you choose the food you did?
Where did you get it? Were you with others?
Did you enjoy it? Would you have the food again?
Was it challenging to try something new?
There are many delicious ethnic restaurants in the Reno/Sparks area and quite a few are within a mile or two of campus. There are even a few ethnic options right here on campus!
Some ethnic food options to consider: Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, Mexican,
Salvadoran, Korean, Filipino, Basque, Chinese, Ethiopian and German, to name a few!
Also, you do not necessarily have to go to a restaurant…if you have the opportunity to try a new type of ethnic food that is home-cooked or from an authentic deli or grocery store, that would be encouraged, as well.
** Note: You are required to include a picture with a time/date stamp) of yourself and the food you tried at the end of your essay. **
Please submit your assignment as pdf on Web Campus. If the assignment isn’t submitted correctly, I am unable to open it in Web Campus and you will receive a zero.
Late assignments will receive an automatic 25-point deduction.
