Assignment Task
Evaluate opportunities and challenges (NB: one or two of each) of interpreting a biblical passage from the New Testament (i.e., Paul’s letters, the synoptic gospels, or John) for a particular professional setting (e.g., Religious Education curriculum in Sydney Catholic Schools). Do this in a 2,500-word essay that (a) emphasizes an innovative thesis statement and (b) balances argumentation with reflection. KEY TERMS “Evaluate means to weigh up the importance, success or value of something, using evidence to support your view” A biblical passage can be anything from a couple of verses to a couple of chapters, but the word limit should be enough space to give due detail depth to the selected text, however long it is; a self-contained scene, episode, series, or section would be a good place to start. “Argument is the attempt by the writer to defend and develop a central idea (a thesis). It appeals to reason and offers evidence or logical proof which is borne out in the argumentation” “Thesis statement is a writer’s claim, position or point of view about the topic on hand. It can be judgmental or make a recommendation.
