Part 1
For your Week 5 Discussion activity, you will be viewing a virtual field experience video and sharing examples on how the teacher used integration for his lesson. As you watch, think about how this lesson would be different if the lesson did not include technology or the arts.
Watch the virtual field experience video of Mr. Larson’s social studies classroom. As you watch the virtual field experience video, take notes on effective practices, the integration of other subjects, and how he engages students in the content.
TO COMPLETE:
Combine what you have observed in your host teacher’s classroom and the virtual field experience video to address the following
· Share one example from the virtual field experience video that would have supported you as a learner. Explain why this strategy caught your attention and describe how this strategy can be modified for a variety of content areas.
· Provide an example from the video of how Mr. Larson created an integrated unit and provide a rationale for why this example was effective in teaching across the curriculum.

Part2
For your Week 5 Assignment 1, you will locate appropriate resources and materials and teach about a current event to your class. Review the Learning Resources for Week 5 on current events and social problems.
Search through current news outlets (websites, newspaper articles, or videos) for a current event that is age appropriate and relates to science, technology, or society. Collaborate with your host teacher to ensure the topic is developmentally appropriate for the students.
TO COMPLETE:
Use the articles, videos, or websites you found to teach the current event to the class. When discussing this topic remind students how to properly interpret the news, discriminate between important and less important news items, and use scientific understandings to make decisions about personal and societal issues. After teaching the current event, submit a 2-page reflection in which you:
· Summarize the current event you selected and a rationale supporting why you picked it.
· Describe the discussion of how you discriminated between the important and less important news items.
· Explain what scientific understanding or evidence you discussed to make decisions about personal and societal issues.
· Explain how this current event demonstrates a relationship among science, technology, and society.

Part 3
In Week 5, you will reflect on the assessment component of your unit and the data you have collected. You will select one focus student for this component. You will evaluate the focus student’s participation and assessment data. You will provide individual feedback to this student, including what they did well and at least one area of improvement.
Respond to the prompts on the unit assessment template. Cite Learning Resources to validate your responses. Address the following topics and provide examples for each prompt:
· Using the data collected from your assessment, analyze the student learning on the standards that you covered during this unit. Include data from the pre-assessment, post assessment, and informal/formal assessments (e.g. observations, questioning) to support your answer.
· How did you differentiate assessments to provide all students the opportunity to demonstrate performance in multiple ways?
· Describe examples of your task-specific feedback to students that demonstrates both their needs and strengths. Explain how students will use this feedback for future learning. How will the assessment guide you to improve instruction and monitor learning?
· Explain how you integrated the arts into the social studies unit to enhance the concepts of inquiry, integration, communication, and motivation. Describe the collaboration strategies you had with experts in this area to create an integrated experience for students. Explain how integrating the arts allows students to take different approaches to their learning and how it helped meet the needs of the diverse learners in your classroom.
