Time Management Follow-Up

What barriers do you think may arise as you work on your doctoral studies, and what will

you do to overcome them?

The main issue that I may be facing during this program is my family. My husband works

long shifts and cannot take care of my son or do housekeeping tasks. Also, since I do not have

any family members in the United States, I am responsible for everything inside the house, such

as laundry, cleaning, cooking, and outside the house, such as grocery shopping, appointments,

and my son’s school activities. So, the only option that I have is to keep practicing time

management to be productive and efficient, have less stress, and achieve more goals. As part of

time management, I can complete my tasks earlier than assignment due dates to prepare for

unexpected life events such as my son’s school close, my son getting sick, or any other

emergency that can affect my schoolwork. “Time management is a skill to reduce stress and

increase performance. Effective time management techniques help you manage the barriers to

effective productivity”. (Muzammil, 2022)

What support mechanisms do you have available?

It is essential to get peer support to get through this program. Most of the students in this

program work full time, are married, and are parents. When we have at least one or two peers

that have connections and ask for help, it gives us confidence and makes us feel supported and

not isolated. Other support that I can get assistance and support from the school, such as writing

center, tutoring, and asking for help from professors when I don’t understand the assignments or

having sometimes personal issues that may affect schoolwork.

In considering your schedule, what is your biggest barrier to ensuring 13 hours of study

time per week for one course? Or 25–30 hours per week for two courses?

My most significant barrier is decreasing distractions while I am completing my

assignments. I must learn to decrease distractions, even mentally. For example, when I come

home from work, I start cooking, cleaning, and other stuff that is not even necessary, and all

these activities prevent me from stay focus and completing my school tasks. According to the

Australian Christian College (2019), reducing distractions during study time can help us stay

more focused on completing tasks. Another barrier is not following the schedule during the week

due to mental breakdowns from work, family, and other life events. Some days I feel lazy to do

anything besides work, which causes me to lose hours of study time.

Who do you need to have conversations with to help minimize this barrier?

Sometimes it is a great idea to have a coffee with your friends, not feel lonely and have

someone to talk to and release our tension through taking. Another great resource is the study

body that studies or completes the assignment together in person or virtually for a couple of

hours a day. These techniques motivate me to keep studying and decrease distractions during my

study time.

Reflect on Your Learning Throughout This Course

What did you learn in this course that surprised you?

I learned time management techniques and how to balance my time between work,

school, and my personal life. Sometimes people assume they know how to use their time-

efficient, but they don’t. For example, I studied when my son was home, and it was about his

dinner time. I could do some work but not as much as I liked. Also, I re-learned writing skills

again, including APA format. After five years out of school, I forgot how to write and how to

submit an appropriate paper.

Another great thing that I learned in this course was to write appropriate feedback to be

efficient and polite. Additionally, writing emails was another great learning in this course. For

example, I responded to emails that contained concerns quickly with an angry tone to defend

myself; however, now I learned I must wait and think of the appropriate way to send back the

emails.

How can you use the information and skills from this course going forward as a scholar-

practitioner?

As a practitioner, I use all these skills in my professional life. Using proper words for

sending emails, writing skills such as tone and style, and time management for academic,

personal, and professional life. By learning to send and respond to valid emails, I can use this

technique at work and in academic life to make sure no one gets defended. Using writing skills,

one of my weaknesses, I can use the right tone and style to write professional papers. I still need

to practice my writing skills; however, I am improved from the beginning of this course. “Good

writing is clear and concise. Lose filler words, like unnecessary adverbs and prepositional

phrases, simply take up space and weigh a sentence down. Say exactly what you mean in the

most direct way”. (Master Class, Staff, 2021). Another great skill that I must use in my academic

and professional life is time management. Time management makes me organize and focus on

daily tasks. I can write my schedule and follow that every morning. For example, I do not go to

work late and pick up my son from school on time. Also, completing paperwork at the workplace

and finish them all the work.

What skills will you be able to use in future courses?

All the skills I learned in this course can transfer to the other courses. This course

refreshed my memory on some skills, and I learned new skills to improve my professional life.

For example, learning and re-learning time management is an excellent tool in future courses

and, to the end of this program. Another great skill that I learned is writing skills. For example,

by learning a new tone of writing, I can write my notes professionally at work and continue

working on my writing skills in the future. Also, I can write a more professional way to finish

this program and complete my research.

What skills do you need to continue to work on in future courses?

Writing skills are one of the skills that I must continuously work on to master that skill.

As I mentioned before, I am not strong in my writing and always need someone to assist me with

grammar and sentence structure.

What resources, if any, did you find extremely helpful during the course?

Walden University’s Writing Center and the library were great sources to find different

topics such as an article, writing centers, and references. In some assignments, finding Articles

was easy in the library compared to searching on google. For example, searching for APA style

was so much easier at Walden skills center than even going through the APA format book.

What resources, if any, will you continue to refer to in future courses or in everyday life?

I would use Walden Writing Center and use Walden University Library for future courses

because they have good information to improve my professional skills. Specially Walden

University Library is an excellent tool for future research and writing my final proposal.
