Candide Essay Assignment
You are to write four to eight pages on Voltaire’s novel, Candide. The essay is to be interpretative and analytical. You will argue the validity of an interpretation you have of the novel. You will use historical evidence to illuminate at least one passage you analyze. Examples from the text will be analyzed in your essay to prove that your interpretation of the novel is valid. Here are topics you may choose from:
What is the philosophical significance of El Dorado in the novel Candide? In a deep sense, what does this place mean? What role does it play in a book so otherwise full of torture and suffering?
What significance do beauty and ugliness hold in Candide?
How do biblical allusions work in the novel?
Compare and contrast two characters from the book. Chart the development of each. Your thesis should state the similarities and differences and argue the deeper meaning of the comparison and contrast.
How are expectations treated in the book? What is the role of irony in the fruition of these expectations?
What is the function of satire in Candide?
An original interpretation or formal analysis, approved by instructor in advance.
You may also create a topic of your own, but must have it approved by me well in advance.

4-8 double spaced pages in MLA format (1000 to 2000 words)
Clear, interpretive or analytical thesis
At least 3 textual examples or references
Analysis of each example to prove interpretation
Application of historical fact to at least one piece of evidence
Works Cited (does not count toward page limit)
Clean grammar, spelling, and punctuation
