Description
Chapters 8 and 9 of your text (Rothwell, J. D. (2019). In mixed company: Communicating in small groups and teams (10th ed.) reviews group decision-making and problem-solving strategies, while Chapter 12 discusses these strategies specifically in virtual groups. You will examine a scene from a film for evidence of how groups make decision and/or implement problem-solving strategies.
Select a scene from one of the following films for analysis in which group decision making is portrayed. Some suggestive films are Apollo 13 (1995; PG), Flight of the Phoenix (2004, 1966; PG-13), 12 Angry Men (1957; NR), Thirteen Days (2000, PG 13), The Wizard of Oz (1939, NR). Please use the text (relevant chapters attached) as the source/reference.
Provide a brief description of a group decision-making scene from the film and answer two (2) of the following four questions:
1. What evidence exists that the group manifested a defective group decision-making strategy ? What steps do you think could have averted this destructive decision-making practice?
2. To what extent did the group follow decision-making steps of The Standard Agenda? The Standard Agenda, described in chapter 9 of your text, is a process for rational problem-solving and decision-making. The steps in this process are: problem identification, problem analysis, solution criteria, solution evaluation and selection, and solution implementation. Provide evidence that the group followed and/or deviated from one or more of the steps in this process.
3. Chapter 9 outlines strategies for creative decision-making and problem-solving. What specific creative problem-solving techniques were implemented by this group?
4. What decision-making rule (majority, minority, unanimity) was used by the group? What were some of the advantages and/or disadvantages of the group implementing this rule? Provide evidence to support your answers.
