In The Use and Abuse of Literature literary scholar Marjorie Garber asserts that works of literature “do not have answers that are immutably true; they do not themselves constitute a realm of knowledge production. Instead, they raise questions, they provoke thought, they produce ideas and generate arguments…”
Select 3 of the 4 works: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, A Raisin in the Sun, Clybourne Park, and Do the Right Thin and identify and explain what you believe to be the most important question each work provokes its audience to consider about race/alterity. Offer specific examples to illustrate your points.
Please note that this essay will be evaluated as if you were taking an examination in a limited final exam meeting of 3 hours. Therefore, you do not have to formally cite your examples. Please remember the expectation will be that you will spend approximately 3 hours briefly outlining, drafting, and revising your response. You will be expected to use all of the allotted time.
