Task description:
‘…diverse institutional locations offer different experiences of film, locating it within diverse histories and socio-cultural networks’ (Harbord 2002, 39)
This task gives you the opportunity to research a Melbourne based exhibition venue in detail to produce a case study of the historical development of the institution and its influence on film culture and film audiences in Melbourne. You will develop a critical account of the broad industrial and cultural issues and focus on a specific programme, past, current or upcoming to draw critical conclusions about the position of the venue in the contemporary cinema landscape of Melbourne. You will use theories, concepts and approaches discussed in class to support your analysis and conclusions.
Note: If you are not in Melbourne, you can select a similar context, either venue or film festival etc in your city, to produce the case study.
Questions to consider include, how the institution positions itself through its film programme [e.g., ethnic language films, Australian cinema, popular cinema; Avant Garde cinema; auteur cinema] and related techniques and strategies. In discussing its cultural location, you may consider comparing it with other Australian or non-Australian exhibition contexts in a similar time period.
How has the venue/context shaped cinema culture in Melbourne and how is its influence read by audiences, critics, and media and cultural commentators. Has this changed over time?
Which factors have shaped the growth and development of the venue (e.g, industrial, cultural, technological etc.)? What strategies has it adopted over the years to grow or transform itself? Consider factors like marketing and promotion strategies as well as shifts in audience preferences and the media landscape, e.g., VOD, streaming etc. You may also consider how the venue addressed the COVID 19 challenge.
Exhibition contexts examples: ACMI, Melbourne Cinematheque, Cinema Nova, Kino, Hoyts, Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, Italian Film Festival; Astor Theatre, IMAX, Coburg Drive-in
