Discuss your position on whether special interest groups and lobbyists should be able to influence policy making. A position paper communicates your viewpoint that is grounded in research and is written with the goal of convincing the reader that your opinion is valid and defensible.
The following systematic approach to writing a position is recommended:
Thoroughly research the topic to understand it and collect factual knowledge and statistical
evidence.
Organize your thoughts and research and develop a paper outline.
Establish your credibility by demonstrating that you have gained expertise in the topic.
Develop balanced supporting evidence for each side of the argument by including at least one
counterargument supported by evidence and then refuting it.
The structure for the paper is as follows:
Introduction
Brief introduction of the topic.
Thesis statement.
Argument
At least two fully developed claims. A “claim†is a rhetorical device that is used to state your
viewpoint on a given topic. The claim must be educated and informed and it must
demonstrate your understanding of the source material and ability to enrich the discourse on
that topic by adding your viewpoint.
