Assignment: 1)Coarticulation in VCV Utterances:  Consider Figure 5. Notice, in the left side of the graph (vowel 1 into the consonant) that there is overlap between the regions for /g/ and /d/. In other words, the same F2 frequency may correspond to a /d/ in one vowel context but a /g/ in another context. What are the implications of this for thinking about how listeners perceive speech?  In particular, can speech be perceived “one phone at a time”?

2) Consider the discussion of tongue control on page 166 (starting with “We may summarize” through “physiological apparatus.”) Think about what this means for second language learning. For example, why might it be difficult for an adult English speaker to become a fluent speaker of Russian?
