1. SCOPE

This document combines the Outline and Essay writing requirements with six annexes created by the CGSS Department of Military History (DMH) and utilized by the Military History Common Core Faculty. You are highly encouraged to review the annexes as well as Student Text (ST) 22-2, Leader Communication (Jan 2020), from the Blackboard Master Library before beginning with the H100 assignment.

2. CONTENTS

a. Requirements for the Sentence Outline and Argumentative Essay.

b. Annexes

(1) Annex A – Concise DMH Style Guide

(2) Annex B – Documentation Guide

(3) Annex C – Creating a Sentence Outline

(4) Annex D –The Argumentative Essay

(5) Annex E – Tips for Writing History Essays

(6) Annex F – Common Issues When Writing the H100 Argumentative Essay

3. REQUIREMENTS

The following instructions are the same as those provided in the H100 Block Advance Sheet (BAS). There are two (2) writing submissions required for a grade in the Military History in CC. The assignments are:

a. Sentence Outline.

(1) Write a double-spaced, one to two page outline of one of the provided questions you plan to answer in your argumentative essay, including the thesis, major points, and supporting points of evidence about what you plan to write in your argumentative essay.

(2) The outline is due by the completion of H113. Paragraph “c” below lists the topics for this essay.

(3) The Pass or Fail requirement will be a sentence outline of no more than one to two double-spaced pages in length. The outline will include an attention step, thesis statement, major points of evidence, and conclusion. This requirement is pass/fail.

(4) See Annex C for instructions on creating a sentence outline. Your instructor will return your outline with comments on how to improve your argument. You must attach this to your argumentative essay when you turn in that requirement. Failure to complete a passing outline will result in REDO until a grade of “Pass” is awarded by a DDE instructor.

(5) Submit a bibliography with your outline

(6) Students DO NOT submit a 1009w with the sentence outline – only with the essay

b. Argumentative Essay

(1) Write a double-spaced, three- to five-page argumentative essay on one of the topics in paragraph “c” below. This essay is due at completion of H113.

(2) Be sure to include the question you are arguing on your cover sheet.

(3) The essay will include documentation in the form of endnotes or footnotes (but not in-text parenthetical citations). See the reference entitled Annex A for endnote and footnote formats.

(4) It is entirely feasible to complete this requirement using only course materials. You may use additional scholarly sources if prior approval is received from either the block SME or ASME. Regardless, you must include a bibliography at the end of your essay. See “Annex A, Concise DMH Style Guide” for the bibliography format. Your bibliography must include all references materials used in the preparation of your essay.

(5) Attach the assessed outline with your instructor’s comments to your essay. You will be assessed on your ability to analyze history as a tool for informing professional judgment. Keep in mind that in the conclusion you will briefly discuss the significance to today’s military professional.

(6) You MUST complete the student self-assessment portion of the H100 Essay 1009w Form for writing evaluation. Submit the 1009w Form when you submit your paper for grading. If you do not complete the student self-assessment on the 1009w Form (the LEFT column the second page/backside) your grader will deduct 5 points from your final score. The self-assessment is a tool for you – the writer – to check your work against the CGSC standard.

c. Choose ONE (1)

1. How have the theories of either Carl von Clausewitz or Antoine Henri Jomini influenced warfare since 1815? Use evidence from H100 (the Western Way of War) to support your argument. In your conclusion, suggest the significance to today’s military professional. Always be specific and use Annex C (sentence outline example)

4. ASSISTANCE

a. Your written essays must constitute your own thoughts, ideas, and work effort. You are encouraged to discuss the essay topic with colleagues, faculty, and friends before you begin writing. Once the process of composing begins, you may only seek advice on matters of style, grammar, and other mechanics. You may not seek outside assistance in matters of argumentation, organization, interpretation, or historical content. Furthermore, if you incorporate material that you wrote for another academic assignment or course, or that you previously published, cite it appropriately. A failure to cite the source appropriately is an act of self-plagiarism and is grounds for disciplinary action.
