Reflection paper
1. Describe an everyday consumption experience that you have had in the past
a. It will involve your acquisition, consumption, or possession of a commodity.
b. This section should identify
i. The commodity purchased (You can choose any commodity of your choice).
ii. It should include only one of the above concepts.
iii. Your rationale for purchasing the product
iv. Where you purchased the commodity
v. When you purchased the commodity
vi. And any other external details you feel are relevant to your experience
vii. 1 page long
2. Analyze your experience using concept from one the classical theorists
a. List of theorists
i. A&H, Simmel, Veblen.
– You can choose anyone of these to make your point.
b. Applying the theory and concept of this author
i. Explain concept and apply
ii. ie. A sociologist examining my experience from Veblens perspective might explain it as being an instance of conspicuous consumption.
c. In this part of the section, you also need to show how well the analysis fits your situation.
i. Does it do a good job of explaining your experience or not? If so, why, if not, why not?
ii. This part of the section gives you a chance to build on the theory.
d. Min- 1.5 and Max- 2 pages
3. Analyze your experience using concepts from one of the contemporary theorists mentioned in class
a. Eckhardt, Belk and Wilson: holt, Peterson and Kern.
b. The emphasis here is on applying the theory and concepts of the author.
c. To do this effectively, you need to explain the concept first
i. Inconspicuous consumption as explained by E, B and Wilson means.
d. Explain and apply.
e. In this part of the section, you also need to show how well the analysis fits your situation.
i. Does it do a good job of explaining your experience or not? If so, why, if not, why not?
ii. This part of the section gives you a chance to build on the theory.
f. 1.5 page or 2 pages.
i. The explanation side of the section (where you explain how the theorist uses it)- 0.5page
ii. Application should not exceed 1 page.
