For your reaction papers, consider the themes discussed so far this semester: globalization, political economy, gender, poverty, social justice and social change, colonialism and decolonization, etc. In your papers you should respond to the documentary’s discussion of the relationship between politics and economics, the Argentinean movement of occupied factory workers, and the role of the international financial institutions. You should also say something about how this film confirmed or disconfirmed some of your assumptions about neoliberal globalization. Who were the main players/actors (political parties, politicians, other groups, and of course, the US involvement? Use your texts from class including Klein’s book “shock doctrine” and “the Power Game.” Refer back to the syllabus for additional recommendations regarding writing but remember that this should be something that you spend some time thinking about. Also: 3-4 pages, double spaced, include a heading with your name, date, title of the film, and reaction paper number. For citation purposes, we watched the following film on the Argentinean financial crisis of 2000-2003: The Film: The Take, directed by Avi Lewis. In English and Spanish with English and Spanish subtitles. First Run/Icarus Films, 2004. Books: Harry E. Vanden and Gary Prevost, Politics of Latin America: The Power Game, 6th ed. (New York: Oxford University Press, 2017). Naomi Klein, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, 1st ed. (New York: Metropolitan Books/Henry Holt, 2007).
