Sample Answer for NRS 445 Topic 3 DQ 2 Included After Question
Assessment Description
Select a research article that uses a randomized controlled trial focusing on a clinical nursing problem of your choice. Use this research article to address the following questions:
Provide an APA reference of the article including a GCU permalink or working link used to access the article.
Using the “CASP Randomized Controlled Trial Checklist,” found in topic Resources, evaluate the study. Based on your findings, summarize the critical appraisal of the selected research article.
Do the benefits of the experimental intervention outweigh the harms and costs? Identify and discuss one other ethical consideration applicable to quantitative research studies such as this one.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.

Research plays a key role in improving patient outcomes. The research findings, especially from randomized controlled trials, considered to be the gold standard, are often used as part of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). However, it is important to evaluate the studies and critically appraise the findings to explore the appropriateness of the findings and whether they can be translated into practice.
The nursing problem of focus is catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Therefore, the chosen article is one authored by Kai-Larsen et al. (2021). This was a randomized controlled trial that assessed the impact of a Foley Catheter with noble metal alloy coating in preventing CAUTI.
The appropriateness of this randomized controlled trial can be carried out using the CASP Randomized Controlled Trial Checklist. From the appraisal, it is important to note that the researchers used randomization to minimize bias while the groups were also similar at baseline to ensure that the outcomes would largely be due to the intervention and not attributable to the differences at baseline. It is important to note that the study personnel were not blinded even though the laboratory evaluation testing was blinded.
The effect of the treatment was both clinically significant and statistically significant since the p-value for reduction in CAUTI rates was less than 0.001 (Kai-Larsen et al.,2021). Therefore, from the critical appraisal of the article, the article is of significant value, and the evidence is of high quality such that it can be used in clinical settings.
It is also evident that the benefits of experimental intervention outweigh the harm and costs. For example, the significant reduction of CAUTI upon using the intervention implies that the patient would spend less on the treatment of CAUTI. The use of the Foley catheter was also well tolerated by the patient, hence signifying prevention of potential harm among the patients. One ethical consideration application to quantitative research studies, such as in this case, is informed consent (Long et al.,2021). It is important to obtain informed consent from the patients before carrying out such studies.
