Assignment Task
Cancer is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is estimated that 1 in 2 people will have cancer during their lifetime. It has been reported that at least one third of cancers could be prevented by lifestyle and diet modifications. However, this association is limited by multiple biases which have weakened the association between diet and cancer occurrence.
The aim of this assessment is for you to evaluate the current evidence base relating to nutrition and cancer and establish recommendations based on sound evidence. You are expected to carry out a thorough search of the literature using databases (MEDLINE, PUBMED etc..). Your assessment will be in two parts: a written report and a presentation.
In the report you will
- Evaluate the portfolio of evidence surrounding this topic while discussing strengths and limitations of studies (consider assessing study population, study design, study duration, internal and external validity, bias and confounding variables, statistical analysis and results presented).
- Contextualise evaluation in terms of other research and the current evidence-base and appraise evidence with respect to plausible biological mechanisms ensuring consideration has been given to alternative explanations.
Using research evidence, discuss the implications of your findings in future strategies to manage this specific diet-disease relationship.
Presentation
The presentation should be no longer than minutes. In the presentation you will:
- Evaluate a single study from the portfolio of studies that you have gathered for the case-study.
- Discuss the strengths and limitations of the study design (consider assessing study population, study design, study duration, internal and external validity, bias and confounding variables, statistical analysis and results presented).
- Discuss whether conclusions and implications are consistent with the outcomes of this paper.
