Part 1 – Biome Viewer Lab
Since you were a child you probably became aware of how energy flows in an ecosystem. You might not have had the words to explain it in scientific terms, but you know that energy comes from the sun and that plants use this energy to grow. You know that cows eat the grass and use the energy they get from the plants to grow, and then you go to Burger King and order a hamburger with lettuce and tomato, and that you use the energy in that food to grow, and you know that eventually the waste from the plant, the cow and even humans gets used by insects and bacteria and worms and the energy is released back into the environment.
Lets start by defining what is an ecosystem and explore some of the basic concepts related to how energy flows through an ecosystem using science terms and at a deeper level.
Click on this Link and scroll down through the Web Lesson.
You can reinforce some of these concepts by listening to this mini lecture by Mr. Anderson, a Presidential Teaching Award winning professor.
Download and open the PDF file of the Student Worksheet using Adobe Acrobat or other program. It should open as a fillable form. Use the link so you can access the lab as a web based lab using a web browser or if you use iPad, you can download it as an app. Complete the Worksheet. You might find the questions refer to terms or words you do not know. Explore the app and you will find definitions. For example under the cog icon.

If you have trouble opening or saving the PDF after you fill the blanks, you can take screen captures, or print it, complete it by hand, and scan it. Whichever way you use to record your work in the worksheet, once you are finished, submit it using the link provided.
If you are not sure how to take a screen capture, follow this link for some help from Windows
