Your personal statement is a one-page essay (not to exceed 4,500 characters, including spaces, carriages, numbers, letters, etc.) that gives dental schools a clear picture of who you are and, most importantly, why you want to pursue a career in dentistry. Although there is no set of rules mandating what a strong personal statement should include, here are a few tips to help you successfully craft a winning personal statement: Explain a defining moment that helped steer you toward a career in dentistry. Consider using that moment as the focal point of your essay. NOTE: I will also upload a copy of my CV to give you additional insight to my experiences related to dentistry that could help you transform my personal statement into one that is compelling, strong, personal, positive, and beautifully-written. I am looking for help to use my experiences, what I learned from that experience and how it motivated me to become a dentist, mention that I want to create an impact that “this person in said experience” had on me. Outline:1) Intro: How I became interested in dentistry? (story: My time volunteering in Vietnam for outreach mission trip and working closely with Dr. Le, who introduced me to the field of dentistry. Also, this experience allowed me to learn about the profound challenges faced by those deprived of getting proper dental care due to social determinants of their health)2) How I immigrated to the US? (relating how I learned to became patience and perseverant, skill dentist need)Told stories about generosity and empathy ( First, I mentioned how generous Dr. Teng, the dentist I shadowed for the four years while I was in high school, was and then related that to how I showed kindness and generosity to elementary students during my community outreach initiatives or another anecdotes that could better depict my traits).3) How I initially join CSUEB’s Pre-Dental Club after transferring from De Anza in Fall 2021 and transitioned to Secretary of the Predental club and show what impact I made. (Story of collaborating with diverse predental students, and how I showed empathy to struggling students who sought help from other predental students through the club).4) My independent research project that investigated the genetic underpinnings of oral health by doing a series of genetic-based lab experiments like PCR, electrophoresis, Cycle Sequencing, Sanger Sequencing. (Don’t have to go into gory details about experiment, just need to show reader the skills that I developed and how this experience will contribute to my career in dentistry + maybe add something about a desire to pursue research in dental school).5) How I honed my manual dexterity + Accomplishment in my research lab (This can combine with #4)6) Conclusion (Answer “Why do you want to pursue dentistry as a career?” and retouch back to the introduction paragraph to bring essay together.)
